A GOAL THAT SAID IT ALL
Forgive me for being so into goals and stadia. I just can't get enough of football these days. And so, I have changed my blog's colour theme to match my favourite football team. And I will not stop talking about it until the World Cup is over. GO GERMANY!!!
When Juergen Klinsmann announced that he had chosen Jens Lehmann as his No. 1 player (No. 1, as in default goalkeeper), I was one of the many who protested. World-class goalie Oliver Kahn has already proven himself so many times and all of a sudden, the coach chose another man for the very crucial job. After Germany's debut match with Costa Rica, where Lehmann conceded two goals, I felt uneasy. I was thinking that the coach indeed made a very bad decision. And then the next matches came and Lehmann proved me wrong. He is not just good, but arguably the best goalie in this tournament.
And once again, during their match with Argentina which ended in a penalty shoot-out, Lehmann showed the world that he is perfect for the position and it was so wise of Klinsmann to have chosen him.
I watched the Germany-Argentina match LIVE at the Ateneo Blue Eagle Gym with Cheenee and another friend of hers. I was so nervous because I could not deny the fact that Argentina was the first great threat to Germany. And based on how they performed, Argentina moved faster, reacted quicker and played wiser. I was so nervous. Plus the fact that Jerwin was making asar, and that Germany fans inside the gym were outnumbered. It was like facing another thesis defence. But when my super-idol Miroslav Klose of Germany managed to cancel out Argentina's only goal, it was a relief. It felt better than orgasm, really. And I knew that at the end of the day, a penalty shoot-out would make the difference. And I was sooo glad that Lehmann was able to save the day. THEY NEVER MISSED A SHOT! Thank God.
A GOAL THAT WAS NEVER MADE
The next day, I was there again to witness the fall of England. It was a really big disappointment. England was clearly the underdog there. David Beckham was off the pitch; he was limping. Michael Owen was ruled out some ages ago. And so the only hopes left were Frank Lampard, who failed to deliver a single goal; Joe Cole, who was very good; and Steven Gerrard, who played really well but was also unable to score. It was a shame to see John Terry, Steven Gerrard, David Beckham and the rest of the guys cry... Oh well.
It was all Wayne Rooney's fault. This ill-tempered airhead received the red card that made the team a player less. Kainis.
THE GOAL THAT SENT THE CHAMPIONS HOME
I was one of the few France supporters inside the gym. Almost 80% of the people inside was all rooting for Brazil. And so, when France scored the only goal in the match, I was one of the very few who jumped out of their seats and yelled to death. Nyahahaha!
I have always believed that the only team capable of beating the five-time world champion Brazil is France. I was sooo hoping that they meet at the quarter-finals. And they did. And I was right. The French murdered the Brazilians. Woohoo!
I did not wish for the French triumph just because I love their team. France is my third favourite team (next to Germany and England). But to be honest, I wanted France to win because I know that Germany is not capable of beating Brazil. France is and they did. And it would be relatively easy for Germany to beat France if they meet at the final. Got the logic? So there, it's actually all for Germany on my part.
But although Miroslav Klose is my most favourite player, I don't think he is the best there is in this tournament. I have always been amazed by Zenedine Zidane, France's team captain. He is, again arguably, the best player ever to emerge in history, I think. I have never seen football with so much grace, style and artistry as played by Zidane. He is a genius. Too bad it would be his last World Cup. But I'm sure his name will never be forgotten.
